A LITTLE ABOUT ME

Hi, my name is Kyit. I'm currently a student in Chung Cheng High School (Yishun). Before taking the MBTI personality test, I always wondered, 'How can five simple letters describe an entire personality?' Now, I finally understand the hype around it because nothing describes me better than the ENFP-T analysis that I read after getting my results. ENFPs are known as Campaigners, someone with extroverted and intuitive personality traits. We are known to be curious and enthusiastic communicators that thrive in social situations and I think nothing else makes a better introduction to me than "Hi, I'm Kyit. I'm an ENFP!"

WHY DO I THINK I'M SUITABLE FOR MASS COMMUNICATIONS?

I have always been enthralled with how the English Language worked. I found that I particularly liked writing, public speaking and hosting live events. Recently, I have found joy in editing short videos on TikTok of me decorating my bullet journal and albums! I've also picked up casual photography and vlogging as a means to capture little moments in my daily life with my friends and as a teenager. We often times hear that our teenage lives are the happiest we will ever be and I wanted to be able to document that in a sort of visual diary. I think that this would definitely give me a head start in the Visual Journalism module.

MY EXPERIENCES

Working with an online magazine
In 2020, while idly scrolling through my Twitter feed, I came across a tweet recruiting writers to help form a team to publish EnVi, the very first fan-run magazine for the K-Pop group, NCT. Seeing it as an opportunity to combine two of my favourite things together, I decided to apply to join the team, not really expecting much at first. I was only 14 at the time and did not have any experience whatsoever. In fact, I forgot all about it, until an email came in a few days after, notifying me that I was invited to join Team EnVi. Over the course of two long months, I worked together with the team to put out my feature article on the backstory of three of the members from NCT. I believe that my experience with EnVi would translate well into RP’s Feature Writing module!

Drama and Creative Writing
I've been in Drama Club since I was in primary school and developed a passion for writing then as well.
I've represented my primary school in various storytelling and creative writing competitions, achieving a place in the top 20 in the National Writing Competition 2017 and winning the title of Best Storyteller in the N6 Cluster Creative Minds Awards 2015.
In Secondary School, I represented my school's Chinese Drama Club to take part in Dunman High's annual Theatresports Competition where my group emerged as the “Most Popular Team” . In 2019 and 2021, we also participated in Singapore Youth Festival, clinching Commendation and Distinction respectively. I also participated in the 2018 and 2019 preliminary rounds of the National Public Speaking Competition. Although I have not been writing as often as I did in primary school, I've crafted a short story on Wattpad and continue to write for fun on my own.

Emceeing for school events
I volunteer myself to emcee school events like Chung Cheng's annual Chinese New Year Celebrations Concert, Open House and Awards Ceremony frequently to expose myself to hosting in different languages.

Starting my own podcast
Earlier this year, my friend and I started a&k, a podcast focused on talking about the K-Pop culture and events. We edit and produce everything by ourselves. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we could not meet up to record the episodes and had to do it digitally instead. Starting a podcast has always been something on my bucket list and I'm glad to say that I've finally crossed it off. I trust that my interest in emceeing and my basic experience in podcasting will give me a head start in the Effective Presentation Skills Module!

Being on MTV Asia's "The Ultimate Stan"
Earlier this year in April, I took part in an episode of MTV Asia's "The Ultimate Stan". Though I was only a contestant on the game show, I was able to gain insight on how a production would typically take place and observe what goes on behind the scenes of typical game shows. The filming process also gave me a taste of what is needed in order to produce a short 15 minute episode. It is definitely not easy but my knowledge of the process of filming videos for professionals and editing knowledge for both videos and audio will give me a more comprehensive understanding of the Video Journalism module.

LEADERSHIP ACHIEVEMENTS

School Ambassador
As a School Ambassador, I've helped my school to organise various activities and show visitors around our campus. One of the most memorable event is when we hosted students from Gimhae Jeil High School in Gimhae, South Korea. It was definitely an eye-opening experience getting to interact with students my age that lived in a foreign country!
I picked up some basic Korean conversational skills from watching Korean-dramas and listening to Korean-Pop music and was the most proficient in the language among my local friends. Needless to say, I was deeply humbled when I met the Korean students! Even though they constantly praised my Korean skills, seeing them converse with us comfortably in not only English but also Mandarin was definitely awe-inducing!
Hosting the students from Gimhae Jeil High School provided me the opportunity to practice my Korean with natives of the language and to make new friends! Though the pandemic has kept us apart physically, we still keep in touch with each other thanks to the advent of technology. Being a School Ambassador has undoubtedly helped to widen my view of the world around me and for that, I am eternally grateful for the CCHYSA team.

Chinese Drama's Performance Leader
I was extremely honored to hold the title of Performance Leader in my CCA and to help direct and lead any performances during my time as part of the Executive Committee of Chinese Drama Club. Throughout my time as performance leader, we ran into the unpreceded circuit breaker last year, meaning that all face-to-face activities had to be suspended and that we had to move our CCA sessions online. Once we were able to resume rehearsals in late 2020, we hurriedly prepared our performance for our school's CCA carnival in January this year. We were unsure if we were able to even perform our piece live and only had a total of 6 2-hour sessions to bring our story to life! We successfully put on our original short play entitled "The Secret of The Classroom", telling the story of two mischievous students who wandered into an abandoned classroom.
This year's SYF was yet another big hurdle to cross. We had to work through multiple disagreements with our teachers because we were insistent on putting on a play we had written by ourselves while she wanted us to perform an adapted old Singaporean play. Despite the initial reluctance by our teachers, the Covid-19 safe distancing measures and a script that underwent constant changes, we pushed through and managed to acclaim distinction in the recent SYF competition.

COMMUNITY WORK

In 2019, my CCA decided to do a project with our neighbouring school, Rainbow Centre. Rainbow Centre is a school designed for students with special needs and as members of society, we felt that we should try to understand the people around us better. In an aim to use drama to connect the two worlds together, we planned a mix of pair and group activities to engage the students of Rainbow Centre and get to know them better.

Another meaningful project I took part in, was an initiative by a group of my classmates, including myself. ProCO₂, or ProjectCO₂ began when a group of 20 environment advocates began to ponder where carbon emissions really came from and we can effectively cut down our carbon footprint. We worked hand in hand with WWF or World Wildlife Fund over the course of 6 months, investigating and collecting data from our school to analyze patterns across energy use. Along the way, we found that the amount of food that our canteen threw out daily was worrying, and we wondered if we could link the two together. After months of hardwork and determination, our end product was a short 5 minute animation, talking about how food waste can lead to adverse effects on the environment and simple things people can do to reduce such damage to the environment
